Remedies for morning sickness - do they really exist?

Remedies for morning sickness - do they really exist? by Barbara Eastcairn

Morning sickness and nausea are experienced by the vast majority of women during pregnancy. Traditionally, the symptoms are most severe in the mornings, and between the second and third months of pregnancy, but many women say that morning sickness can persist right through to the end of their pregnancy.

Before we look at the available remedies, it will be useful to look at the causes of morning sickness. While medical science has not reached a consensus, it is widely accepted that it is caused by a number of factors in combination. These factors include the increase of estrogen in the body during pregnancy (hormone changes), low blood sugar levels (these are at their very lowest after sleep), extreme sensitivity to smells, and the body reacting to limit the intake of foods that may be harmful to a developing embryo.

If it is of any comfort, it has been shown in various studies that pregnant women with the severest morning sickness have a lesser chance of a miscarriage, so it may be an adaptive advantage to be sick and nauseous.

There are many, many traditional remedies for morning sickness which may work for you and we will only cover the most popular here.

Remedies for morning sickness include -

1. Ginger - taken in capsules, in tea or in food (ginger biscuits) is one of the most common recommendations. You can also suck natural ginger root.

2. Dry crackers or dry toast - eaten instead of, or before breakfast. You can also snack on these during the day.

3. Lemons - taking a little lemon juice or simply smelling it.

4. Meal size reduction - instead of large meals, have smaller ones spread throughout the day. Snack if you feel even a little hungry - do not allow yourself to get very hungry then gorge food.

5. Only eating bland foods with no strong flavors or spices, no rich sauces, and no greasy foods.

6. Avoiding cigarette smoke (it goes without saying you should not be smoking yourself).

7. Taking a small snack during the night if you get up.

8. Getting outside and breathing deeply.

9. Sucking some ice or sipping some water.

10. Taking vitamin B6 (many prenatal supplements will have this).

11. Sipping warm or cold peppermint tea.

12. Lying down and not moving for a couple of minutes if you feel nausea.

If you try all these and find none of them work for you, and you are vomiting all food back up, you should see a physician - you do not want to get dehydrated or undernourished.

It may also help you to vary your diet for a week, and at the same time to keep a daily journal of exactly what you are eating. Also note down whenever you have particularly bout of nausea or vomiting. It should become obvious after a week (or less) which foods your body doesn't want.

Good luck, and morning sickness will eventually pass!

Home Remedies For Asthma Sufferers

Home Remedies For Asthma Sufferers by Jackson Sperry

There are a number of home remedies for asthma - some more effective than others. There are many "old wives tales" that have been handed down over the years, and many of these are really not effective at all. The best home remedy for asthma is one that everyone with asthma should practice - environmental control.

By environmental control, we are talking about controlling things in your home that will help to avoid asthma attacks. Historically, asthma treatments have dealt with the symptoms of an attack, after the attack has already started. The only preventative measure that was offered for many years was "avoid exercising and getting short of breath".

Over the last several years, much more has been learned about the causes and effects of asthma and it's now realized that asthma doesn't just sit dormant waiting for a flare-up. It is more like diabetes - a chronic condition that can be affected by your lifestyle and environment.

Because certain things in your home can trigger as asthma attack, one of the primary keys to avoiding it is to control your home's environment. So forget about inhaling crushed garlic or drinking onion tea - try some of these home remedies that actually work:

1. Avoid smoking or letting anyone else smoke in your home. Cigarette smoke is one of the most common irritants that causes asthma attacks.

2. Don't burn fires in wood fireplaces or stoves - the smoke from the fire can also irritate.

3. Watch what you spray in the air. Things like air fresheners, perfumes and cleaning products can get into the lungs and trigger asthma attacks.

4. Keep your home as dust-free as possible. Dust mites are one of the most common irritants for asthma sufferers. And this doesn't just mean dusting regularly, it also means avoiding things that can cause dust to accumulate:

- Use polyester filled comforters and pillows - Wash all bedding in HOT water (130 degrees plus) weekly - Cover your mattresses and pillows with covers that are mite-proof - Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter which traps dust mites and other allergens. Many vacuum cleaners simply blow them back out after picking them up.

5. Avoid mold build-up, again one of the most common asthma triggers.

- Wipe down the bathroom and laundry room with bleach weekly - Avoid humidifiers as they can encourage mold growth - Use a fan or improve the ventilation in bathrooms to decrease moisture

Effective Home Remedies For Constipation

Effective Home Remedies For Constipation by Javier Fuller

Disturbance in your digestive tract is commonly referred to as constipation. In this disorder, there is an irregular movement of your bowels. Constipation itself is a root to many diseases and disorders. This is because it produces toxins in the blood serum and then those are carried to the other body parts. It can cause other diseases such as rheumatism, appendicitis, arthritis, cataract, high blood pressure and even cancer in some of the rarest cases.

The symptoms of constipation include irregular elimination of faecal matter that is hard in nature. The other symptoms are foul breath, coated tongue, loss of appetite, depression, nausea and dizziness. Ulcers in the mouth can also occur sometimes with varicose veins and heart burn.

The main cause of such a state of disorder is the bad lifestyle patterns that you follow, coupled with improper diet. Insufficient intake of water and excessive use of coffee and tea can also lead to this state. Drinking, irregular eating, insufficient chewing, all together makes the functioning of your bowels poor. Apart from this lack of physical activities and and irregular defecation habits with emotional stress and strain, also lead to constipation.

But you can always cure constipation. If the medicines are doing nothing good to you, then you have the option of home remedial treatments. They are:

1.Pear: It is an effective fruit for the treatment of constipation. Making it a part of your regular diet, can help you a lot.

2.Grapes: Since ages, grapes have proved to be a very effective natural remedy to cure constipation. Grapes contains sugar, cellulose and various organic acids that make them an ideal constipation healer. Besides cleaning your stomach, they also tone up the tissues of your stomach and the intestines.

3.Bael Fruit: It is regarded as the best fruit in curing this disorder. It cleans and tones up your intestinal space.

4.Guava: Guava provides you roughage that is very essential for the proper digestion of food. Roughage helps in the normal evacuation of your bowels.

5.Spinach: Spinach is the most vital food for your entire digestive system. The organic elements that are present in spinach cleanse, reconstruct and help the regeneration of the worn out tissues of your intestinal tract.

A simple diet surely helps you to keep away from constipation as it clears your stomach. A simple diet is one that consists of unrefined foods, like honey, bran, wholegrain cereals, lentils, fruits, green leafy vegetables and various milk products.

Apart from them there are also other home remedies that help in treating constipation. For instance, a glass of hot lime water, with added salt is very effective. It is also said that taking an overnight kept water in a copper container helps you considerably in this direction. Linseed is a useful product as it provides both roughage and lubrication to the stomach.

Home Remedies for Wart Removal

Home Remedies for Wart Removal by Alyssa Green

As we all know warts are not only embarrassing but a real eye sore. Thankfully there are many ways that one can remove them safely and naturally using simple Home remedies. When it comes to wart removal more and more people are taking the decision to remove their own warts. According to the British Journal of medicine they found no clear or concise evidence that any of the medical treatments available today have a higher cure rate than natural home remedies or folk remedies or fewer side effects for that matter.

Using Duct Tape is one of the most effective and popular wart removal methods and was reported in the Archives of pediatrics & Adolescent medicine the October 2002 issue. The method is as follows: One cuts a small piece of duct tape just big enough to cover the wart. You then leave it on for five or six days. During this time if the original piece of duct tape falls off just replace with a new one immediately. At the end of the 5 or 6 days remove the tape and soak wart in water, then gently rub the wart with a pumice stone. Leave tape off overnight then reapply the next day. Repeat the complete process until the wart is gone. This method should not take longer than 2 months.

Essential oil of tea tree is a powerful antiseptic which kills most bacteria and thus is an extremely potent method of wart removal. This method is also very popular due to its very high rate of success. Just apply essential tea tree oil directly on the wart daily until it disappears. This method should not take to many applications due to its effectiveness.

The taking of Echinacea pills will assists the healing of mild skin infections thus also making it a great help for warts. Take one or two pills a day as prescribed on the bottle. Echinacea was highly used by Native American Indians as a universal remedy for just about everything. By the early 1900's it was the most popular herb in medical practice in the USA. Echinacea is still one of the most prescribed herbal products worldwide.

Other common and popular methods of Home Remedies for Wart Removal include applying a single drop of essential lemon oil directly on the wart itself. Repeat as necessary until wart is gone.

Aloe has been used for hundreds of years apparently for wart removal. One can use it in either plant form which I feel is more potent or in cream form. Apply on wart until it's gone. Aloe will of course also speed up the healing process.

Rubbing a banana peel on your wart for a few weeks as well is supposed to be a big help. One should rub the banana peel multiple times during the course of the day for maximum effectiveness.

In conclusion I would like to add that In addition to being a low-cost way to have your warts removed, another advantage to using home remedies is the privacy you will get. Home remedies are usually carried out at home. This means that you should be able to do them on your own, without assistance from anyone else, including a healthcare professional (which will save you a lot of money) This means that if you are embarrassed about your warts, you may prefer to stay in the comfort of your own home; the use of a home remedy will allow you to do just that.

Natural Headache Remedies To Ease Your Pain

Natural Headache Remedies To Ease Your Pain by Helen Williamson

Migraine headache pain can be excruciating and even with the abundance of drug related headache cures, more and more sufferers are seeking natural headache remedies and more effective migraine headache treatments and prevention.

Having been involved in training Aromatherapists and Reflexology Practitioners over many years at and also running the Scottish Group of the Guild of Complementary Practitioners, I have become very aware of the power of what many people term Alternative Medicine. (I prefer "complementary")

However, the medical profession in general tend to ignore the natural remedies that have proved effective over thousands of years and they persist in poisoning our systems with Drug Therapy, which often exacerbates many conditions or in fact triggers other conditions and at the very least creates nasty side effects.

So it's entirely understandable that people are turning away from traditional allopathic medicine and seeking "Alternative" forms of headache pain relief and information of natural headache remedies and prevention methods.

It's incredible that our highly trained medical professionals lean towards the modern drug therapy (toxic chemicals) and completely ignore the more natural and effective remedies that have been tried and tested over many thousands of years.

Many common and annoying ailments can be alleviated and often prevented by the use of these natural products.

For example, probably the most common type of headache is caused by tension or stress and a build up of toxins in the brain, and is generally treated with "over-the-counter" drugs from the pharmacy, like Paracetomol or Nurofen or similar pain killers, which can cause stomach problems and as mention, often cause further problems due to a build up of toxins in the body.

Our modern day lifestyle tends to be very stressful and so the stress / tension headache is extremely prevalent in modern society. Wouldn't it therefore be more sensible to alleviate the stress and thus prevent the headache pain, which in turn then does away with the need for pain killers.

Let's just take a look a few simple ideas for relieving stress and general tension...

One of the simplest and best ways of easing stress and tension and also eliminating toxins from the body is to simply "Breathe" properly.

Every breath we take fills our lungs with oxygen, which is then carried by the haemoglobin in the red blood cells to every cell in the body. Every cell must receive this life-giving oxygen to remain alive and healthy and so you can see how very important proper breathing is for maintaining health in general and not just for relieving stress and eliminating toxins.

Of course, it is essential that the air we breathe is as fresh and pure as possible, which can be difficult in the highly polluted atmosphere of our inner cities and once again if we constantly breathe in toxic and polluted air we can actually bring on toxic headache pain. So first make sure that you breathe in "fresh air".

Try this simple breathing exercise... Simply sit in a relaxed position, preferably with the eyes closed and take a deep breath, drawing the air deep into the lungs as if trying to fill the stomach. Hold the breath for a count of four and imagine the oxygen flowing through your body and filling every cell with clean, fresh life-giving energy.

Next breathe out slowly through your mouth imagining your whole body relaxing as if deflating as the toxins pour out. Just picture every cell in your body releasing all the toxins and impurities that cause the problems and exchanging them for that oxygen and feel the tension just flow from you whole body.

Pause for a few seconds and repeat the process, each time trying to fill the lungs even more. Hold the breath for four or five seconds once again and then slowly allow the body to relax as you breathe out all the toxins that are causing the problem. Repeat this breathing exercise at least ten times and you'll find that you are much more relaxed and less tense.

This simple exercise is very powerful and not only helps you relax and get rid of any stress and tension, but also rids the brain of the toxins, which can be the chief cause of common headache pain.

I hope this brings some relief without having to reach for the usual drugs.

However, for more severe headache pain there are numerous natural remedies that have been used with great effect for thousands of years and I'll try to bring you some tried and tested pain relief methods in future articles.

An Easy Natural Home Remedy for Sore Throat

An Easy Natural Home Remedy for Sore Throat by Miles Tyler

At some time or other we all suffer from the nastiness of waking up with a sore, scratchy throat. The following is a cure that I came up with six years ago and it never fails to work for me. I try to do this as soon as I feel a sore throat coming on. It not only alleviates the pain but it actually cures the throat by killing the infection before it gets worse. The secret is in the key active ingedrient, tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic that is good thing to have on hand. Now on to the cure.

What you will need:

An 8 ounce glass.

A spoon.

Very warm but not completely hot water.

3 teaspoons of sea salt.

1-3 drops of tea tree oil.

First you need an 8 ounce glass of fairly warm water, not very hot but hotter than luke warm. Do not fill it to the top. Fill it a little over three quarters of the way full.

Next Your Stir in 3 teaspoons of sea salt until it dissolves.

Then you add 1 to 3 drops of tea tree oil. You will want to add more or less depending on how badly your throat is hurting. No less than one and no more than three drops. Do NOT over do this. Tea tree oil is very potent. Remember that only a little is necessary for the antiseptic effect to work properly. After it is mixed gargle vigorously but do NOT swallow as tea tree oil is not to be taken internally. This is another reason why you want to only use the smallest amount necessary. Continue to gargle and spit until the glass is empty. Repeat every four to six hours if necessary.

Cellulite Treatments - 3 Best Remedies

Cellulite Treatments - 3 Best Remedies by Ken Black

Cellulite is a common term used to describe overfilled fat pockets right under your skin. These are fat cells that have become enlarged causing these cells to take up more space between the skins connective tissues than normal. The fat then expands these spaces resulting in the overlying skin dimpling, often called the orange peel effect. It is obviously not too pretty, that is for sure.

It appears in ninety percent of post adolescent women, but is rarely seen in men (not fair). Common areas where cellulite tends to appear, are the thighs, buttocks, and the abdomen. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not related to obesity, since it occurs in overweight, normal, and thin women. As you might have already guessed, it causes many image problems and many women avoid wearing short skirts or shorts because of it.

What causes Cellulite ? There are many factors, such as :

1. Heredity - it may run in your family. However, you can still do a lot to fight the effects.

2. Not drinking enough water - water helps flush toxins and waste from your body. Drink seven to eight glasses of water a day.

3. Diet - poor eating habits (alcohol, caffeine, spicy or fatty foods) contribute to the formation of cellulite because the toxins they produce get trapped in the fatty tissue. Saturated fats block the arteries and get trapped in the tissue as well, preventing sufficient waste and toxin elimination.

4. Smoking is not only bad for the skin and lungs, but it weakens the skin by causing constriction of capillaries. It also damages the connective tissue and can increase the dimpling effect of cellulite.

5. Tension and stress can cause a muscle to seize up in pain and they can also cause the connective tissue that covers that muscle to seize up. Tension can also block the tissue, preventing proper waste elimination and purification.

6. Medication can disturb the natural processes of the body, disturbing the purification system that is naturally in place. Diet pills, sleeping pills and diuretics can all lead to cellulite; oral contraceptives, which increase estrogen, cause fat cells to enlarge, leading to water retention. Retaining water inhibits the body from flushing the system of toxins, leading to the formation of cellulite.

7. Lack of exercise contributes to the formation of cellulite. Exercise decreases many health risks and also improves muscle tone, circulation and overall well-being, helping to break blocked tissue and purify the body.

There are three main cellulite treatments - endermologie, cosmetic surgery, and topical creams or lotions:

Endermologie - As scary as it may sound, the Endermologie machine, developed in France over a decade ago, has been found to have an effect in fighting cellulite. It uses rollers and gentle suctioning to deeply massage the affected areas, increasing circulation. Toxins and abnormal water buildup are expelled as connective fibres are stretched. Endermologie also exfoliates the skin, leaving it soft and silky. The increased circulation may give you a natural energy boost. Many sessions are normally needed. This can add up to several hundred dollars and it is expensive.

Cosmetic Surgery - treatments like liposuction (surgery to remove fat) and mesotherapy (injection of drugs into cellulite) are either expensive or may produce only temporary improvement. Many doctors advise against liposuction because it is designed to remove deep fat instead of cellulite, which is close to the skin. This is performed by a plastic surgeon and can be expensive compared to other methods. Consult with your doctor if you want to explore this further.

Cellulite Creams or Lotions - thankfully, this is a less costly alternative and is the safest and most popular way to reduce the problem. Because cellulite is actually little pockets of fat under your skin, your blood circulation does not easily reach these areas and specially formulated creams can help. Some of the ingredients used in these products include Algae extract (which can break down fat and increase your metabolism), Green tea extracts (will back up the algae extract and increase the rate at which your fat is broken down to form smooth tissue) and Retinol A (a compound that is a derivative of Vitamin A) and targets your skin and connective tissues directly to condition and strengthen. Retinol A has a rejuvenating effect on your skin, and will decrease your cellulite while preventing it from becoming worse over time. It can improve your skins texture, so your skin will become smoother and firmer and this helps your cellulite vanish even faster.

So, try one of these cellulite treatments and make yourself even more beautiful and confident.

Home Remedies for Wrinkles

Home Remedies for Wrinkles by Kevin Pederson

It is natural to see wrinkles on the face when you grow old. This is the effect of ageing. Premature ageing and wrinkles can be checked if care is taken when you are young. A lot of people rely on home remedies when it comes to diminishing them. Here are some tips and home remedies to get you started on the path to minimize these wrinkles and make your skin look young and healthy again.

Stay out of the sun The first place to start is to stay out of the sun. Sun tanning damages and ages your skin faster than anything, and it also has been leading to cancer more and more since the ozone is wearing away from pollution.

Eat healthy Secondly, incorporate healthy doses of natural antioxidant foods like leafy green vegetables and brightly colored fruit for maximum free radical elimination. Free radicals are the number one cause of collagen breakdown, which is a direct cause of wrinkles.

Smokers beware Smoking robs the complexion of oxygen, decreasing blood circulation to facial skin and resulting in premature lines and wrinkles. Also, anyone puffing on a cigarette is essentially doing a lot of repetitive facial movements that add even more wrinkles. So kick the habit if you want those wrinkles to disappear.

Sleep on your back When you sleep on your side or belly with your face on the pillow, wrinkles are formed. People who sleep in this posture usually get a diagonal crease on their forehead running above their eyebrows. Sleeping on your back eliminates this problem.

Facial massage Massage increases the blood circulation and results in the tightening of muscles and tissue. This reduces the fleshiness of the skin and restores a young look. You can apply coconut oil on the portions of your skin and face where wrinkles set in and gently massage every night at bedtime.

Go bananas Try banana as an anti-wrinkle treatment. Mash a fourth of a banana until it becomes very creamy. Spread all over your face and leave on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water followed by a dash of cold water. Gently pat dry.

Hair Remedies For Dry, Brittle Hair!

Hair Remedies For Dry, Brittle Hair! by Kacey C.Hall

Dry Hair and Sun!

Dry hair is often caused by too much time in the sun, chlorine, salt water, over-shampooing, permanents, heat styling, or neglect. Protection from the elements is the next step in treating dry hair. Consider using a conditioner with an SPF of at least 15, or even better, wear a hat when out in the sun. Use a swimming cap while in pools or salt water, and always rinse hair thoroughly after swimming. Preferably, use a rubber cap that prevents water from getting into your cap and wetting your hair.

Avoid Hot Blowers Dry hair is caused by heat, an open cuticle, chemicals applied to the hair, and poor maintenance. Heat styling such as hair dryers, curling irons, and hot curlers all cause dry hair. Perms, bleaching and color treatments cause dry hair as well. Although we like our curls and colors, going natural is one of the best ways to avoid dry hair. If you must have your hot blower, try to limit to only once a week, and not daily.

Home Remedies for Dry Hair

1) Less or no heat. When blow drying, use a cooler setting and do not blow dry until the is completely dry.

2) Use acidifiers. Acidifiers close the cuticle down and lock in moisture. Acidifiers have a pH of 2.5 to 3.5. They have a lower pH than hair does in an aqueous solution.

3) Color, perms, relaxers, and other chemicals are sometimes a necessary evil. They rob the hair of humectants. Humectants attract and retain moisture (water) in the cortical layer of the hair. Try to use low ammonia -low peroxide color. Do not leave neutralizer on too long with perms. If possible avoid relaxers.

4) Treat your hair. Replace lost humectants with essential fatty acids (lipids), acidify your hair, use low pH products, use cool water. Replace what was taken out to make your hair dry. Also eat a diet full of essential fatty acids (in moderation and non-animal {no cholesterol}).

Hair Care Conditioners

You need to give your hair lots of TLC, with product that are designed to restore your hair's moisture level to its optimum 8%. Look for shampoos that contain natural humectants (magnet like properties to attract moisture), that will work together will your natural oils, to restore your hair's moisture level to its optimum 8%. Treatment conditioners that contain wheat, rice or corn proteins will repair damaged cuticles, improve porosity, elasticity and general health and appearance of your hair. There is a reason why salon brands are more expensive, they often contain higher grade ingredients and are free from silicone as most cheap shampoos contains.

Avoid Hot Blowers

Radiator heat, blow-dryers, deodorant soap and dehumidifiers can all rob you of the moisture you desperately need. That can leave your hair brittle and strawlike and your skin flaky and dry, especially in the winter.
